From April 27 to May 3, 2025, the Poland Pavilion at Expo in Osaka became a vibrant venue for exploring the culture, art, and heritage of the Łódź Voivodeship. The regional week’s program combined artistic creativity, education, traditional crafts, and elements of modern lifestyle – telling a cohesive story of a region that boldly blends avant-garde with folk culture.
Kobro’s Sculpture and Chopin Animation
A symbolic introduction to the week’s atmosphere was the presentation of an artifact – a sculpture by Katarzyna Kobro, one of the most prominent figures of the European avant-garde and an icon of 20th-century Łódź art. The sculpture was accompanied by an animated film set to the music of Fryderyk Chopin, paired with a modern promotional video highlighting the Łódź region as a space of innovation, culture, and energy.
Workshops, Concerts, and Traditions
Every day in front of the Poland Pavilion, workshops were held by the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum in Łódź, where visitors could create traditional “spiders” (folk mobiles), paper cutouts, toys (including the beloved teddy bear Miś Uszatek), and learn the basics of folk weaving. Meanwhile, the Łódź University of Technology and other local universities offered classes in STEM and applied arts for children and youth.
Workshops in cyanotype printing organized by the Łódź Film School also drew significant interest, along with interactive activities by the Museum of Art, where participants constructed sculptures inspired by Kobro’s work.
The Rhythm of the Week – From Karate to the Philharmonic
Each day featured karate demonstrations as a creative collaboration between sport and performance art. In the evenings, the stage was filled with music – from chamber concerts by the Łódź Philharmonic and performances by students from the Łódź Academy of Music to joint acts with Japanese artists.
Polish Flag Day
On May 2, as part of Polish Flag Day celebrations, an outdoor picnic was held featuring music from the Łódź region, culinary showcases, and tastings of local products – combining a festive atmosphere with the promotion of the region’s culinary heritage.
