Poland. Fryderyk Chopin Week

Poland. Fryderyk Chopin Week

From mazurkas to calligraphy – Fryderyk Chopin inspires anew in the heart of Osaka.

Fryderyk Chopin Week at Expo 2025 is a cultural dialogue, a meeting of artists, and five days filled with sound, reflection, and shared musical experience.

From August 28 to September 3, 2025, the Poland Pavilion will become a space dedicated to the legacy of Fryderyk Chopin, with the participation of Japanese artists, scholars, and an international audience. The program, curated and delivered by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, will include concerts, films, workshops, and meetings with Polish and Japanese artists.

One of the most valuable highlights will be the display of original manuscripts by Fryderyk Chopin, made available especially for Expo thanks to the collections of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. This is a rare opportunity to see authentic musical notation by the composer, documents that seldom leave Poland.

National dances, jazz, and film

The week will open with a day dedicated to Polish national dances, including performances of the kujawiak and a screening of the film Japanese Kujawiak, followed by a discussion with its creators. In the evening, Chopin’s mazurkas will be performed in both classical and jazz interpretations by Marcin Wieczorek and Artur Dutkiewicz.

Songs, letters, and Chopin’s voice

August 29 will focus on Chopin’s songs, performed by the duo Aldona Bartnik & Naruhiko Kawaguchi. The day will close with a special event hosted by Prof. Tokimasa Sekiguchi, dedicated to Chopin’s letters, featuring actors and musicians.

Young pianists and the film “Pianoforte”

August 30 will spotlight young Japanese pianists – participants of the Chopin Competition – in a series of recitals. The film Pianoforte will also be screened, with appearances by its creators and featured artists.

Historical piano and its legacy

August 31 will be devoted to historical pianos, with lectures by Dr. Michał Bruliński and performances by Naruhiko Kawaguchi. On this day, an original historical piano used in the concerts will be delivered to the Poland Pavilion.

Chamber concerts and the music of Chopin’s era

In the following days, performances will include the Polish Cello Quartet with their program Chopin Project, and solo recitals by Aleksandra Świgut, Agnieszka Świgut, and Antoni Wrona, combining Chopin’s works with music from his time.

Education and everyday art

Throughout the week, calligraphy workshops will take place, offering a Japanese artistic perspective that connects the written word with the emotional depth of music.
