In the following week of regional presentations, the Silesian Voivodeship invited Expo 2025 attendees in Osaka into a world full of color, sound, movement, and storytelling. The event program, under the slogan “Silesia – Tradition in Motion”, blended education, art, folklore, and modernity, creating a welcoming space to explore the richness of the region.
From Chopin to Animation – A Culture That Connects Generations
The week began with a screening of an animated film set to the music of Fryderyk Chopin, followed by a regional promotional video that portrayed Silesia as a modern region with deep roots through the lens of culture, science, and heritage.
The featured artifact of the week was a composition made from Bogucice Porcelain – a series of specially designed teacups with motifs inspired by the “Śląsk” Song and Dance Ensemble. This elegant display paid tribute to the tradition of Silesian applied arts and craftsmanship.
Art, Handicrafts, and Theatre – Workshops for All Generations
Interactive artistic and educational workshops took place daily in the Poland Pavilion:
- The 9sił Foundation from Jeleśnia (Silesian Beskids) led sessions on painting wooden horses and spinning tops, referencing folk toy-making traditions and the symbolism of motion and dance. Participants also crafted paper flowers and wreaths, typical elements of Silesian festive decorations.
- The Ateneum Theatre from Katowice invited children and adults to engage in theatrical play—creating masks, simple puppets, and exploring the behind-the-scenes world of puppet theater.
- The Animated Film Studio in Bielsko-Biała organized in-depth workshops centered on the heritage of Polish animation. Participants designed their own characters using animation desks, solved themed puzzles, made flipbooks, and took part in quizzes about classic Polish cartoons.
- The University of Silesia in Katowice hosted science and outreach workshops as part of promoting the Silesian Science Festival—combining experiments, lectures, and hands-on learning.
The Stilt-Walking Treasurer and Four-Legged Friendship
As part of street performances and outdoor displays, visitors could encounter the Skarbnik on stilts—a legendary figure from Silesian mining folklore—vividly narrating the story of Upper Silesia and its industrial heritage.
Theatrical elements were also present. The Ateneum Theatre staged a puppet performance titled “Four-Legged Friendship”—a touching and accessible tale about a boy and his dog, told through a universal language of emotion and family values.
The “Śląsk” Song and Dance Ensemble – A Cultural Ambassador of the Region
Concerts by the “Śląsk” Song and Dance Ensemble were a permanent feature of the week’s program, offering a strong artistic highlight. With their powerful stage presence and vibrant aesthetics, the performances brilliantly conveyed the spirit and character of the region’s cultural identity.
