Empathetic design in healthcare: how Medical Design Studio is transforming hospitals

Medical Design Studio is an interdisciplinary design studio focused on humanizing hospital spaces—especially pediatric ones—by creating friendly, supportive environments that promote healing and emotional comfort for patients. The studio's approach is rooted in the salutogenic philosophy, which assumes that well-designed surroundings can actively support health and well-being—not only by reducing stress, but also by fostering recovery.
The MDS team includes designers, illustrators, graphic artists and specialists in production and installation. They also collaborate with psychologists and educators, allowing for a truly holistic approach to design. The studio’s portfolio includes dozens of projects, ranging from small renovations to comprehensive transformations of medical facilities.
Medical Design Studio’s work has been recognized internationally. It is the only Polish company to have twice received the top award from the prestigious International Academy for Design and Health. In 2021, the project “Metro on Foot” won first prize in the Innovative Project category, and in 2024, the project “12 Floors Around the World” received first place for Use of Art in Public and Private Spaces.
For many years, Medical Design Studio has proudly collaborated with the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŚP). Thanks to this partnership, numerous projects have been completed—including fantastical CT imaging rooms that make children feel safer and often eliminate the need for sedation during procedures.
Medical Design Studio is living proof that empathetic design can genuinely support the healing process and create spaces filled with dignity, emotional safety, and optimism.
